Green Solution for the Blue Planet
To produce glass, the minerals are melted at 1650°C. To ease the melting process, traditional E-Glass formulation contains added melting agents such as boron and fluorides. Unfortunately, their emissions are detrimental to the environment as most of those agents will be present in the gas emissions.
A drastic reduction of these manufacturing emissions is now possible with 3B E-CR glass, thanks to an advanced melting technology and a patented formulation that does not rely on adding boron nor fluorides.
By eliminating boron and added fluorides from its composition, 3B E-CR glass needs a higher melting temperature. Normally this would mean higher energy usage and higher NOx emissions. But thanks to a process of integrated pollution prevention and control, we have used new combustion techniques that include oxygen-gas firing and furnace design optimization. 3B E-CR glass formulation combined with melt process modification leads to a dramatic reduction in nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions of around 80%, as well as a reduction in the overall gas usage and associated carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per ton produced.
Switching from traditional E-glass to 3B boron-free glass means more value for the customer and less impact on the environment.
- Removing boron from the glass composition stops dust particulates being created. These are associated with the partial volatilization when exposed to high temperatures.
