Manager - Instrumentation

For our new plant in Goa (India), we are seeking an experienced and hands-on Manager – Instrumentation with strong expertise in field instrumentation, erection & commissioning, and complete instrumentation lifecycle management. The role demands a deep understanding of process instrumentation, calibration, loop checking, and automation integration, coupled with leadership and project execution skills in a regulated manufacturing environment.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end field instrumentation activities – selection, installation, calibration, commissioning, and lifecycle maintenance.
  • Manage erection & commissioning of new instrumentation systems, ensuring compliance with P&ID, engineering specs, and safety standards.
  • Drive loop checking, I/O verification, signal testing, and system integration across PLCs/DCS/SCADA platforms.
  • Supervise installation and maintenance of sensors, transmitters, control valves, actuators, pressure/temp/flow/level instruments.
  • Coordinate with project, production, and OEM teams to ensure timely and error-free commissioning.
  • Develop & implement SOPs, preventive maintenance schedules, calibration plans, and legal metrology documentation.
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation faults, breakdowns, and control loop issues with root cause analysis (RCA) and implement corrective actions.
  • Manage statutory compliance, documentation, and audit readiness for ISO, IMS, and safety systems.
  • Optimize spares inventory, vendor coordination, and cost-effective procurement planning.
  • Mentor and lead a team of technicians and engineers for instrumentation upkeep and project rollouts.

Technical Expertise

  • Instrumentation Selection: Deep knowledge of transmitters, analyzers, control valves, thermocouples, RTDs, flow meters (magnetic, DP, vortex), level sensors, etc.
  • Commissioning Tools: Loop calibrators, HART communicators, multimeters, signal simulators, etc.
  • Control Systems: PLCs (Rockwell, Siemens, Mitsubishi), SCADA (FTView, Wonderware), DCS (Foxboro).
  • Field Communication Protocols: HART, Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP.
  • Maintenance Platforms: SAP PM – for scheduling, breakdown analysis, and equipment records.

Compliance & Standards

  • Thorough understanding of Legal Metrology, statutory calibration requirements, and instrumentation documentation.
  • Familiar with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and ISO 50001 standards.
  • Certified IMS Internal Auditor preferred.

Leadership & Operational Excellence

  • Drive project execution from instrumentation perspective: scope, timelines, manpower planning, cost control.
  • Ensure adherence to 5S, FMEA, 5 Why, RCA, and energy management practices (ENMS).
  • Ensure plant readiness for external/internal audits related to instrumentation and metrology.
  • Maintain effective liaison with vendors, contractors, and regulatory bodies.

Qualifications

  • UG: B.E. / B.Tech in Instrumentation, Electronics, or Telecommunication Engineering
  • Preferred: Diploma in Instrumentation with hands-on commissioning experience

Experience

Minimum 12–18 years of relevant experience in field instrumentation, erection & commissioning, and plant maintenance – preferably in process/chemical/FMCG industries.
